Jennifer's Hip Replacement Surgery
Week 5
Thursday, February 25, 2010
I took the day off today so I could drive Jennifer to Peabody for her follow-up visit with her surgeon, Dr. Wood. He examined her and took X-Rays, and declared that she was doing very well (we already knew that, right?). So well, in fact, that he OK'd her to schedule surgery on the right hip in April.
So, later that afternoon, she confirmed the right one will be done on Wednesday, April 14, just 2½ months after the left! She's amazing!

I don't need this. Just havin' a quiet afternoon at home doing the laundry, when I realized I was hearing this gurgling noise. I looked around, and there were these little bubbles coming up in the "bowl" in the 1st. floor bathroom. So I flushed it, and all it did was fill up - no "flush". Don't know why, but next I looked in the basement where the washing machine was doing its thing, and saw water splashing onto the floor! I ran down and turned it off, then after checking a few other drains around the house, realized this situation needed a plumber.
McGrath Plumbing arrived about an hour later and, after working on it for 2 or 3 hours, using 2 different electric-powered snakes, one 35', the other nearly 75', we were no better off. As it was getting dark, he said he would be back tomorrow (Sunday) to dig up the drain in the yard so he could attach a bigger snake!

McGrath came back around 11:15am and dug out the drain in the yard. Then he got out this water/electric-powered device. He ran it pretty far out, almost to the street, with no success. Now I'm beginning to worry that the street will have to be dug up to get to the bottom of this!
Not one to give up easily, McGrath said he knows someone with a really big water-powered snake with a cutter on the end (in case its a tree root), but he's not likely to be able to come until Monday. The good news is that, because of what he's done so far, he said we now had "limited use" of the facilities.
Yikes! Kinda makes you look forward to going back to work, doesn't it?

Well, the "Big Gun" arrived this morning and within 45 minutes was gone again! When I looked outside McGrath was filling in the hole. I asked what happened and he said, "We're all done - problem solved!" Actually, its not clear if it was a tree root or something else, like a caved-in old clay pipe. Anyway, the Big Gun apparently made it all the way to the street before it encountered the jam, but it just blasted through without being able to determine what was actually causing the blockage.
When I went inside to deliver the good news to Jen, all she had to say was, "Quick - go flush all the toilets!"
Normal life. What a concept.
